What is A COACH?

Do you wake up and wonder about why certain areas of your life are not satisfying or fulfilling? Have you felt the weight of a failing or floundering relationship? Or the stress of the relationship and interactions with your boss or customers? How about the drama and hurtful exchanges you have with family members and friends? Most of the time you find yourself pulling your hair out because you tell yourself that you have tried everything. You’ve held your tongue when you wanted to express how you really feel. Or you say how you feel and it turns into an argument or a debate. You don’t feel listened to or understood. So what do you do, you give up. You become resigned to the “fact” that this is the way it is and there’s nothing else you can do to change it. After all, you can’t make people listen or understand you and you definitely can’t change people. So what are you supposed to do about it?

That’s where a coach comes in. Coaches are not mental health professionals such as psychologists, psychotherapists and psychiatrists who must possess not only advanced degrees but also a state license. These professionals provide treatment and rehabilitation for diagnosed mental conditions or disorders. The focus tends to be on past experiences, such as trauma, that may serve as the source of hindrance for the client in their present. Coaches may be considered therapists in the same conversation as a social worker or a counselor. Why is this important? Coaches may or may not have advanced degrees. They are trained and certified in coaching by various schools or institutes. Some schools are accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF).The ICF provides the standard for the coaching industry, emphasizing the importance of core ethics and core competencies. They also offer a plethora of education and training.

Even though they all strive to improve people’s lives, coaches are focused on the present versus the past. Coaches help clients discover how past events may contribute to present obstacles. They will then facilitate the process to overcome those obstacles in furtherance of obtaining the future clients desire. Coaches do not tell clients what to do. There are many types of coaches such as a spiritual coach, accountability coach, executive coach, relationship coach, business coach and the list goes on. There are also different types of coaching styles. Below is a list of a few. Transformational coaching- Popular with life coaches, transformational coaching focuses on the many aspects that make up who you are and how your attitude and perception of yourself impacts your experience of life and the relationships you have, both personal and professional. Transformational coaching is great for people who seek clarity and are curious about what limits them from having whatthey want in life. Then using this process to take new actions thus producing desired results.
Holistic Coaching- Holistic coaching focuses on the entirety of a person’s life with the belief that every area affects the other. Changes made in one area of your life will inevitably be duplicated everywhere. Somatic Coaching- Somatic coaching recognizes that the body, mind and spirit are all key components that make up the individual. The transformation process is achieved through the body and spirit and not just through the mind. The process becomes one of embodiment that generates new ways of being. The world of being a coach literally takes on a life of its own. You will find many traditional coaching types, styles and methods. Some are not traditional because they are newly created or crafted by innovative coaches who use their education, training and experiences in a way they believe works best for their clients. Regardless of the coaching style or a combination of coaching styles and methodologies, coaches can help you overcome a tough situation or help you clarify a goal and then take specific action to achieve that goal whether personal or professional. The industry is forever evolving and growing around the world. If you have an appreciation for personal development and growth and this process appeals to you, make an investment in yourself, and call a life coach. Your life will thank you for it.
